Equatorial Guinea relocates capital to mainland
President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo signed a decree directing the move, citing territorial planning and national security as the main reasons. “The relocation of the nation’s capital, from a security standpoint, is a crucial step, given that the government has been the victim of several attacks originating from abroad via maritime routes,” the statement said, referencing past incidents including a 2007 bank robbery in Bata and a 2009 attack on Malabo’s Presidential Palace.
Authorities also framed the move as a step toward modernization, breaking from colonial-era structures and reinforcing the country’s goal of creating a more resilient and strategically positioned government seat.
